Throbbing pain, pain that interrupts sleep or sudden strong sensitivity can indicate decay, inflammation, a crack or infection.
Swelling in the gum, cheek or jaw, especially with fever, heat or a bad taste, should be assessed urgently.
Dental trauma is time-sensitive. Contact the team immediately and bring any tooth or tooth fragments with you.
A lost restoration can leave the tooth sensitive or exposed. Avoid chewing on the area and arrange an assessment.
After a fall or impact, contact Dental Nation promptly, particularly if a permanent tooth is loose, broken or knocked out.
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket; otherwise keep it in milk and contact Dental Nation immediately.
Rinse gently with warm water, remove trapped food with careful flossing and use a cold compress outside the face if there is swelling. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.
Save any fragments, rinse your mouth gently, use clean gauze for bleeding and place a cold compress outside the mouth.
Arrange urgent assessment. Do not apply heat or attempt to drain the swelling yourself. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, call 998 or go to hospital A&E.
Keep the restoration if you have it, avoid chewing on the area and do not use household glue. Contact the clinic for an appointment.
Not every emergency can be completed definitively in one visit. Root-canal completion, crowns, complex surgery or other restorative work may require a follow-up appointment.
