Prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, injections, vitamins and supplements can affect dental treatment. Share a complete, current list so your dentist can plan your care safely.
Do not stop or change prescribed medicine on your own. Many medicines can be continued for dental treatment. If a change, test or special timing plan is required, Dental Nation will explain the instructions and coordinate with your prescribing clinician where appropriate.
Bring an official medication list or clear photographs of the packaging if that makes the information easier to provide. Update your medical history whenever a medicine changes.
These medicines may affect bleeding, but stopping them can create serious health risks, and most patients do not need routine interruption before dental treatment. This group includes warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel, apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran or edoxaban, and injectable anticoagulants. Tell us the medicine, dose, reason for taking it and prescribing clinician so the dental team can assess the treatment and give individual instructions.
Bisphosphonates, denosumab and some cancer medicines can be relevant to healing after extractions, implants and other procedures involving the jawbone. This includes alendronate, risedronate or ibandronate, zoledronic acid, denosumab, and antiresorptive or antiangiogenic cancer medicines. Do not arrange a drug holiday yourself; tell us why the medicine is used, how it is given and how long you have received it.
Long-term steroids, chemotherapy, biologic medicines and other immune-modifying treatments may affect healing, infection risk or the timing of elective care, including prednisone or other corticosteroids, methotrexate, biologic or immunosuppressive medicines, and recent or planned chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The dentist may need treatment dates, recent test results or advice from your medical team.
Meal timing, fasting instructions and changes to eating after a procedure can affect diabetes management, including insulin, diabetes tablets, GLP-1 or other injectable medicines, and glucose-monitoring requirements. Do not skip meals or diabetes medicine unless your treating clinicians have provided an individual plan.
Ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and other pain-relief products may affect bleeding, the stomach, kidneys or interactions with prescribed medicines. Tell the dental team what you take and how often; do not automatically stop these products for a fixed number of days unless you receive specific instructions.
Natural and non-prescription products can still affect bleeding, sedation or interactions with medicines, including ginkgo, garlic or ginger supplements, St John's wort, high-dose vitamin E, and sleep, weight-loss, bodybuilding or sports products. List every product you use; the clinician will tell you whether anything needs to be paused and for how long.
