Alginate tray adhesive

Alginate tray adhesive is a coating placed inside an impression tray so set alginate remains attached while the impression is removed from the mouth.

Alginate is an irreversible hydrocolloid impression material that gels around the teeth and soft tissues. The adhesive forms a bonding layer between the tray and the alginate, which helps preserve the impression during removal and pouring.

The clinician selects a rigid, correctly fitting tray, applies the compatible adhesive, and allows it to dry before mixing alginate. The material is loaded without trapping air, seated evenly, held still until set, and removed with a controlled snap before the impression is disinfected and poured promptly.

This is a clinical material rather than a treatment for a patient to apply at home. Ask the dental team if the impression tears, detaches from the tray, distorts, or causes gagging, because a repeat impression may be needed.

Ask which adhesive matches the alginate and tray, how long it needs to dry, how the impression will be disinfected, and whether the recorded anatomy is adequate for the planned appliance or model.
