Braces white rubber

The white rubber around a brace is usually an elastic ligature that holds the archwire in the bracket slot, and it can stain with foods and drinks.

Fixed braces use brackets bonded to enamel, an archwire that delivers controlled force, and small elastomeric ligatures or clips that secure the wire. White or clear elastomeric rings are selected for appearance, not because they whiten the tooth.

Pigments from curry, tomato sauce, coffee, tea, smoking, and plaque can make a pale elastic look yellow or dull. The ring can also lose its original appearance as it absorbs moisture and ages between adjustment visits.

Brush carefully around brackets, use interdental brushes or orthodontic floss, and limit frequent staining foods and drinks. At an adjustment visit the orthodontist can remove the old ligatures, clean around the brackets, and fit new ones if needed.

Contact the orthodontic team if a ring or wire breaks, a bracket comes loose, a wire is poking, or cleaning is becoming difficult. Persistent gum swelling or white marks on enamel need prompt review.
